So who's got the quickest N/A 350 c.i. L98 here?
So who's got the quickest N/A 350 c.i. L98 here?
Just wanna know, theoretically, what their potential is. I'm mainly looking for trap speeds and ETs, but if you think you're bad and haven't made it to the track please tell me about your setup, too.
Thanks,
Chris

hoping for high 14's after I put a turbo in....
by the time I'm done I should be in theory close to mid to high 11's on my daily driver

What do you still consider an L98? Do you draw the line at aftermarket runners? A SR? An LT1 intake conversion? Aftermarket heads allowed? Or do you mean a stock head/cam/stock TPI L98?

Basically, taking the L98 motor and swapping on any cam, heads and intake, but no strokers. Also, I'm more interested in street cars than trailer queens, which means 93 octane or less, unless they sell more than that at a local gas station.

I'd throw a vote for David91RS/Z28, he's running a 355 with AFR's and SuperRam, etc. so far 12.0 with traps over 114, on a stock t5 to boot! My Idol:hail:
Then there's me, I've got the parts, but have yet to do them justice.

I hope to see 11.9's N/A, that may or may not happen, but it is what I'm shooting for. My car is far from optimized, it needs a higher stall, better exhaust (I have terrible headers), probably a new fuel pump, and it is not tuned at all. I have burnt one PROM so far with a couple guessed changes on it. It is my daily driver when weather permits. I could drive it in the rain, but I have another car so I choose not to. And when I took it to the track, I drove it 1 hour with the a/c on there, ran 12.3, and drove it back with the a/c blasting.
If you took an L98 and threw some great heads on it, a MR or LT1 intake, and a Comp Cams 306 or similar cam, with the right gearing/stall/etc. you could probably run mid 11's.

Well this is sort of a silly question, because all a L98 is is a Small Block Chevy with TPI on top.
So If you can choose any intake, And Heads, and Any Cam profile, No strokers...
Well there are plenty of examples in the 10's
Maybe not in thirdgens, but it dosent matter. Still a L98
Now If you want to restrict that to EFI Small Block chevy's, then You might be a little more realistic.
But even So, there is no reason a Aftermarkt DFI w/ FI converterd manifold Will run just as fast as some of the Carb Setups.
So again, its really a silly question.

12.0 is easy for a street L98 - assuming the parts are matched well and the car is mild (no 4000rpm converters or 4.56 gears).
I would think that a blueprinted bottom end (still using stock crank rods, and pistons) could push 6500rpm. If you can make peak power at 6000-6200, you probably could make 450hp, which is enough for 11.5 or so with good drivability. You would definitely need aftermarket (or heavily ported stock) heads, an aftermarket cam, intake, and a really free-flowing exhaust.

I have a BONE STOCK bottom end L98 although its no longer fuel injected. I honestly believe I could lay down some high 12's but I dont have the suspension to hook up. My car just roasts the tires in any gear when you floor it.
I'm gonna go to the track sometime next week I still need to do some more tuning / leak fixing on it.

Hey Biaaach
Well Mr. 12sMustang,
My car will be around 450 with my extensively ported TFS Twisted Wedge G2s. and such listed in my sig.
My car won't be ready till monday. The guys at the shop said that my heads needed special bolts for recessed bolt holes. THey are 200 dollar bolts (ouch)
Anyone else ever heard of the recessed bolt holes?
They guys said that they couldn't fit a thin walled ratchet down there. The new bolts i got are 12 points with a big washer on them.
I asked them if they could just use washers on the stock ones, but that wouldn't allow enough thread to hold down the heads.
--Dan
P.S. 12sMustang has an AFR headed 5.0 with a cobra intake and a "special" cam with over .550 lift. Pray for his T-5

A couple months back HotRod did an article on a guy with an 89 Formula 350 who was running 10s with the stock short block. It was on the cover of the mag, pulling a wheelie!
yeah I have that one
When 12s mustang came to my dormroom I showed him that. I think he wants to see a streetable one that is owned by us thirdgenners.
Yeah he has a stock shortblock...but everything else is SLP, NOS, Dynomax, Koni, And Currie (9 inch).
That guy can't really drive that baby on the street with his suspension.
--Dan
P.S. If you look closely at the cover you can see that his right tire is barely off the ground. the right side pulled up a whole lot.

BTW
The guy riuning 10s with n20 (for you Mark) from the cover of hotrod has L98 heads form a corvette that were SLP prepped with better sprongs and portwork. You can get a lot out of stock heads with portwork and new springs.
Yet, I cna't imagine what i will be getting with my Ported TFSs...mmmmmm

I hope to see 10.9 once my car is tuned, I get a Ford 9", driveshaft and put the nitrous kit in my basement on. Time will tell, but I should see at least low 11's.

12sMustang, what are you running and what are your mods? I have a friend with a 92 GT 5-speed that runs low 15's and he needs a good streetable combo. He was thinking about AFR 165's, TrickFlow intake and a custom cam by Flowtech (I think).
12s mustang mods
Heads: AFRs decked to 62 chambers. w 1.6 roller rockers
Cam: Custom cam by some outrageously serious cam grinder. 300 dollar cam.
Intake: 99 Cobra intake/injectors.
Headers:Mac Shorties (gonna be long tubes soon)
Exhaust: Off road X pipe.
Rearend: 4.10s POSI
AC Delete
WC T-5 tranny
Tires: Nittos 245/50 DRs
Missing anything Chris?

Did you mean 93 Cobra intake? Also, what AFR heads does he have? Just the 165cc? If the 165's, why a "custom" cam?

Marc, AFR165s, IMHO based on extensive research, are the perfect head for a 302. No flycutting is required on the stock pistons as the Heads are inline valves that are only 1.90s on the intake 1.60 on the exhaust. They tend to make better numbers all around on a 302 than do the 185s.
If I chose to put a blower or stroker on/in the motor, then I'd opt for the 185s, but since they are made from the same casting 165s can become 185s with new valves and porting.
Also, if you're looking for the best intake combo, AFR recommends the Performer RPM. It's a bit expensive, though.
