All People with Machined Blocks please help
Ok, here's the story. I bought a 5.7 out of an 87 Iroc this summer. The guy told me he had the thing rebuilt with the pistons shot peened, parts magnafluxed and hot tanked. So I take the heads off, and sure enough, 2 cylinders have rust corrosion. I now have to get the block honed .30 over.
How much does this cost? How much have some of you guys payed? I don't want to do the whole 383 stroker thing, I just want a 355. I don't have much money because I already invested a lot into the parts that I was going to put on (vortec heads, cam, etc). Please help me out. Thanks!

Machine work prices vary alot from one place to another, and from one shop to another. It has usually cost me about $150 for bore and hone, $75 or so more for torque plate honing which is a very good idea.
Resist the temptation to cheap out on machine work. Poor quality (low bid) there can utterly ruin your block permanently, as well as making your motor just generally fall far short of expectations by smoking, short life, blowby, etc. Spend less money on parts if you have to, but DO NOT cheap out on machine work. Find out who does it for the round track racers in your area that win, and pay what it takes to get yours done there.
You'll need new pistons and rings too. I'd recommend the Sterling (a brand of Sealed Power / Speed Pro etc.) hypereutectics, and Sealed Power moly rings. You can get both for a good price at Summit.
You can re-use your stock crank and rods if they're still good, get ARP rod bolts if you want to significantly strengthen your bottom end for as few $$$ as possible.

last block i had done cost 8 dollars a hole, but they clean it too so add another 40 for that plus freeze plugs cost 10 dollars to install and cam bearings are 35 to install plus the bearings and freeze plugs will cost you around 35 dollars and if you get the block cleaned you'll need freeze plugs and cam bearings.
