Problem when car is first started and shutting down
i am trying to help my friend with his 87 camaro 305 V8...it is bone stock and it's having problems...first of all when you first start up the car the idle is way high and you have to press the gas really quick to get it to idle down to normal...also when you shut the car off the motor keeps turning and making that loud knocking sound like the motor doesn't want to shut off...it will shut off after about 5 seconds...
is this the carb that is causing the problem? it's the stock q-jet 4 barrel...how exactly can i fix this? new carb? or just rebuild it? also is there somewhere where i can find misc. parts for third gens like door edge guards and such??? thanks

3D,
For the first problem, I'd suggest cleaning the external linkages on the carb, then lightly lubricating them. Check the throttle shaft for binding, then set the curb idle and fast idle cam. Make sure the choke linkage moves freely. After that, adjust the choke thermostatic spring correctly.
High idle on a cold start is normal. If the engine continues to idle high, there may be a problem with the choke heater element, or the auxilliary oil pressure switch that drives the heater element.
As for the run-on, typically that is an overheating, carbon deposit, or fuel mixture issue. There is an idle speed solenoid on most E4ME carburetors that must be set correctly, and the mixture control solenoid adjustment should be checked as well. The idle solenoid adjustment should help with the run-on, but the mixture solenoid check is essential.
