crankshaft sprocket removel

having problems pulling sprocket off crankshaft, have a cheap pulley and it keeps turning engine, not removing spocket. Any ideas on how to pull it off without turning engine? Buy a better pulley???

It sounds like the puller is binding on the snout of the crank. Does your puller have a bearing cap on the end of the main screw deal?
You can try some anti-sese on the end of the crank snout, or in the bearing cap if you have one.

gear puller

if the fly wheel is still on, put a screw driver thru one of the holes to bind the engine to keep the crank from turning. Then try turning the the bolt on the puller. Cheap or not if you can get the jaws on the gear and the bolt on the end of the crank you should be able to pull the gear off

Yea, done that & works good.
My newest tool to help is a piston stop. Just pop it in one of spark plug holes and your set.

...also if the screw is allow to turn in the cup, there wouldn't be any force turning the crank while pulling the sproket off. I've done this on bearing seperators, just put a socket between the screw & the crank snout. Most harmonic pullers have screw cups, and that what I use also.

Oh yea, make sure your not drilling into the crank with that screw. Thats a good way of stripping the crank threads.
