2.8 v6 dieseling?

well my friend just got a camaro ('84 sc v6) i think its the 2.8...right? well its dieseling when he shuts it off for a few seconds.... i thought it might be carbon or something so i tried that 'misting water in the intake' trick and it didn't really do anything at all....also he's using oil i believe, leaking too I pulled a plug and it seems to be fine , not too lean but im not really sure what the heck this thing is doing ... i know it would be good to rebuild it but he doesn't really have the cash for it right now... anything we can do to help it out before it dies!

Also, what is the idle in P. Sometime a high P idle will cause it too.

Base timing is 10* from the factory. Most people say they've had better results with about 13*. I don't know what total timing should be.
