Backfiring

When I start the car when it's cold and I drive it it backfires for a few minutes until it gets warmed up. My mechanic told me it's a common thing for Camaros to do this. Is this a common thing?

Thanks for any help!

What, common? Sure, when there is something wrong.... Is it carbed? If so, make sure the choke is set properly.

Thank you for your reply but I'm sorry I don't know what "carbed" means. (I 've never been into cars until I got my '84 Camaro end of May so I'm not familiar with a lot of the lingo yet.)

The mechanic said he looked into why the car was making that noise (he said that he even checked with the dealer mechanics and they all said it is common) unfortunately I live in a small town with an even smaller selection of garages and quite frequently run into problems with them. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Does it have a carburetor or is it fuel injected. I am assuming that it is carbureted since it is an 84.. My 83 Z-28 used to backfire due to the timing was off and the fact that it had glass packs made the backfire even worse. I would check the timing. If you do not have that much knowledge about cars then I would take it to a shop and just have them tune it. It wont cost very much and the car will run a whole lot better. Just tell them to set the timing. Have them tune the carb as well. It could just be the choke if it only does it when you start it up.

Where does it backfire, in the engine compartment or out the exhaust?

Oh well, then that shouldn't be a timing issue, or choke problem.
