An update on my engine trouble....

Well, after having a professional come over and take a look at my time gear and what not, yeah, the gear on the Cam was GONE, nadda there. Upon further inspection we found that it had all desintigrated into the oil pan. Well, after that it was beyond my expertice to fix. So, now its in a shop....Heres whats been wrong with it so far in my journey to fix the damn thing:

1) Timing Gear Was Striped
2) Harmonic Balancer Was Bad
3) The Gear That Shreded Ended Up In The Oil Pan, Which Required The Removal Of The Oil Pan, Which Meant Lifting The Engine. And Upon Further Inspection It Was Found That Peices Of The Gear Got Sucked Up Into The Oil Pump Feed Line (Not sure of the real name) causeing other problems.
4) My overheating problem is because the electric fan hasn't been spinning
5) 2 Pushrods are bent for sure, I even got a ride over there and saw them, there could be more though.
6) My ignition module was toast, I replaced that, but car never ran so I don't know what that has changed yet.
7) The Cam may be FUKED

So, in short, I feel as though I have been raped by the dealer I bought the car from. And its irking me all to hell. I spent all the money I had, BUYING the damn car, and now, I'm spending the same amount AGAIN to fix it. Though by reputation the dealer has a history of selling junk. But, at the price I bought the car at, and the way it was running at the time, it seemed like I was ripping him off. So, all in all I've been having tons of fun this last week, and I dunno if all that fun is over quite yet. ::Sighs::

Well, if I do have to replace the cam in the engine, what should I replace it with that would have a nice impact and not need me to change a million and a half things? Its a 305 LG4 Carb'ed.... Heh, what a fun journey Well, if everything is fixable and what not, at least I'll know that I have all new parts in those certain areas, right?

  • 1. But of course.
  • 2. They often are, just from age. Not connected to the timing set failure.
  • 3. It always does, it's just plastic & chinesium), it hardly ever blocks the screen which is about all the harm it can do, not too much to get excited about.
  • 4. Well I guess you would have had to deal with that, timing set or no...
  • 5. Change them all, they're about $2 apiece, nothing to get excited about. Stock ones bend all the time. Again, the timing set had nothing to do with it, a stock LG4 small block cam has so little lift that the valves won't ever hit the pistons as long as the valve springs still work.
  • 6. Like the fan.
  • 7. Maybe; but again, not as a result of the timing set failure.
IMHO you should fix it, put it back together, etc.... if you didn't purchase a warranty then the dealer doesn't owe you anything... sucks, but that's the way it is... the car is worthless as it now sits, the absolute worst thing you can do is to try to sell it in that state.

Changing the cam is not a bad idea. I'd suggest a Comp XE256 if you decide to go that route. Always keep in the back of your mind though, you have an engine that's at the end of its useful life, as demonstrated by the timing set; if you abuse it, or even just start using it significantly harder than it has already been used, it probably won't last long.

Used cars are like this. I know how you feel, the first car I bought in my life ran for 2 weeks and then the crank broke, so I've been there too. But, what's done is done, and you can't reach back into the past and change it, you just gotta figure out where to go from here. One day you'll look back on this and laugh... as we say around here where I work, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

I appreciate all the insight, makes me at least feel better about the whole thing. And, as far as this engine is concerned, It may not be in there for a whole heap of time (4 months at the most). Because I am in the process of purchasing an IROC-Z with a 5.7L 350 TPI in it, the car itself isn't in such good a shape as it could be, but the engine looks great, I'm going over there to see how it runs, but it looks like the kids who owned it before hand messed with the wiring harness (But, I can get another very easy). Its got a Cran Cam sitcker under the hood, as well as SLP, accel and some other sticker that I can't remember, and the heads are painted and don't look stock at all.... so, could be a good buy, if only for the engine. At which point me and a friend plan on using his garage for an engine swap (I know I know very little about all this engine stuff, but, the only reason I couldn't fuss with the T/A is because its my only ride... and I don't have time to mess around with it, which in this case I'll be able to at least have time to find and buy a beater) which I have 2 friends that have expeirence in doing. (One of them posts on these very boards )

So, I guesse your right. I'm looking at what I can do in the future, and at the moment, I have to fix the car. So, a hard lesson to learn, yes, but in the end it may not be as bad as it seems.

BTW, I really appreciate all the help you've provided RB83L69.
