When I did mine I had to drop the starter, exhaust, and lift the engine 3.5 inches. Make sure you put the timing mark on the crank pulley at 6 o'clock.
After doing that it was a breeze.

thanks alot...just more thing. when i jack the engine up.....where do i jack it up under and then where do the jack stands go cause dont you jack it up under the pan?
thanks again!
thanks again!
I have never deen able to sneak the oil pan past the flywheel/flexplate and get it out. Can't drop the rear of the pan far enough to clear by a long shot. Trans has to come out. Starter can stay, though when doing this. Obviously, you have to take the engine mount bolts out.
I jacked underneath the balancer using a block of soft pine wood to keep from appying too much force in a limited area on the balancer outer ring.

Jack it up like normal and put the stands where you would normally. To jack the engine up I used the oil pan with a block of wood between the jack saddle and the pan. To hold the engine up put blocks of wood in your engine mounts. Make sure you remove your distrib cap before you jack.
I never had to do this on my Z, but i did do it on my 87 vett. On the vett, you can remove some crossmembers beneath the engine to get access. Not sure if you can do it on the camaro? Just a thought

really the only thing down there is the main crossmember, where the engine mounts are. you'd still have to lift the engine to hold it while you dropped the engine crossmember, plus have to deal with re-bleeding your brakes........
would be a major pain.
your best bet would if you can pull the engine, do so.

I Had to remove my pan , i unbolted engine mounts , removed trans mount , removed ditributor . I was fortunate to use an engine hoist lifted the engine as high as possible after that i was able to remove the pan by pulling onthe rear of the trans"ps" may have to remove drive shaft. IT gave me some xtra clearance . It is tough but it can be done!!

thank guys for your help..................i'll probably just unbolt the engine mounts, the starter, the exhaust Y-pipe from the headers, and remove the ditributor cap. the other things seem a little to much for me since im new to this stuff and i would really hate to ruinin anything.

When I did this I found on my one piece rear main seal engine only one type of pan will slide in there without pulling the whole engine. And the pan is not made anymore. I went to the dealer and bought a new Milodon pan and both were the same but both were a half inch too low right before it gets to the sump. And that was all the clearance I needed to get it to slip in. I ended up having to go to a junkyard and pull the pan off of a van. Cleaned it up and it worked. Just funny that GM changed the design of the pan alittle somewhere along the line. Good luck with it.
