Finally solved noisy lifter problem
Here's the original thread https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=84661
Never did write to Crane. Did do a warmed-up, running adjustment on the passenger side several months ago (never got to the other). Didn't seem to make any difference.
I was under the car this weekend to reattach the park brake cable to the T-bar (came off in wet freezing weather - won't do that again thanks to nylon tie wraps). Noticed the driver's side collector to y-pipe joint was carboned up pretty bad - I thought it was leaking since I could hear it getting louder for the past month or so. Snugged it back up, now actually tighter than the original installation, dropped back to the floor, went for a test drive.
Hmmm, lifters are quiet now...

I have been chasing a driveline vibration for the better part of the last year. Replaced u-joints, had drive shaft balance checked & rechecked, checked & rechecked drive line angles, rebalanced wheels, yadda, yadda, yadda. Finally decided to replace the rear pinion flange, guess what, vibration gone ! It's always the last thing you do that fixes it.
I must say, at least you're persistent.
I've got one of those goofy, lame-***, stainless braided "flexijoints" at the end of the factory header on the mighty 122 in my S-truck, and I can't even get a new one to be quiet. It sounds a little like the locust chirping noise of piston skirt scuffing at some throttle openings, and it took me a while to get used to it. The 355 will easily take care of that as soon as I can settle on the fuel system I want. John M., you listening?

Persistent? Stumbled onto this one, actually.
I have a vibration story, too. On '84 G20 van, had it for 6 years now. Has had a pretty nasty vibration/shake at 60mph+ the whole time we've had it. Replaced u-joints (twice), rear tranny mount, tranny output bushing, had driveshaft balanced & straightened, replaced rear brake drums, had 13 different tires on it.
Last winter when I put the snows on, I didn't put the rears on the front like I had in the past. Vibration went away. This spring, I figured, must be the rims (only constant in all this), at least one of the two that weren't on during winter. So, got new rims and put those two tires back on - still shook. Could it be we've always had at least one bad tire all this time (except last winter)? Replaced those two last weekend, finally smooth again (one of the snows was developing a bubble before being taken off last spring - it's gone now, too).
And I was about to replace the pinion yoke...
