Timing chain question

May sound like a dumb question but I am sure someone else is wondering about this too. How tight should a new timing chain be?

When its installed on the motor it should be quite tight.
You should only be able to deflect the chain say .5inch tops.

new doesn't really matter unless the maker screwed up. there isn't an adjustment. to check for wear hold the chain sideways and it shouldn't sag more then the thickness of the chain, or about a 1/2". i never reuse a chain or gear set if i'm in to an engine were they're exposed.
