something Nasty going on with my engine

hey guys whats up ?
my 92 305 tbi rs has lost all its guts and one mechanic says its the cam and another says it the coil that is gone.
the symptoms are : the rev gauge keeps moving up and down by about 250 rpm under all driving conditions.
it feels like it is missing a beat when stopped at the lights.
when i floor it, the engine hesitates and then picks up but seems to surge .
the mechanic that reckons it is the coil showed me a big spark that was arcing from the coil terminal to the metal band around the coil.
is this enough to cause all these problems?
any help would be appreciated.
thanx in advance.
