Actually, once you remove the timing sprocket from the cam, you should see a thrust plate already bolted to the front of the case. The factory put that there just for your use in case you ever wanted to change the cam.

Unless the thrust plate is heavily worn, you should be able to reuse it succesfully. If it doesn't have one for some reason, you really need to get one.
One thing you might want to consider replacing is the distributor drive gear, however. These do tend to wear and may not be in as good a condition as they appear. The cost of a replacement is cheap insurance.
