gettin headders put on today!
wooohooo! now ill have a super duper free flowing exhaust on my 86 t/a......its got a h ollowed cat and a flowmaster on it also. does anyone think itll be too loud? might i have to get one of those silerncers to calm the noise. i use it on the highway a lot so i dont want it to be unbearable at wot.
can anyone estimate how much hp was freed up by freeing up the exhaust and adding an edelbrock foam air filter thingy?
i put the air filter on and it made a big difference cause my old one was really dirty.
thanx

Congrats, but just headers won't make it too loud. It will be a great increase, but not over done.
If you had a 3'' cat-back then it would sound even better.
I'd estimate a 15hp increase from the headers.

Which foam Edelbrock air cleaner do you have? The flat-top triangular one? If you have that, get it off there as soon as possible, before it gets ingested into your motor and destroys it like so many others of those have. They are strictly a street-rod park in the parking lot with the other street rods so 8-year-old boys can oooh and aaaah over the chrome kind of thing, not a go-fast or street-reliable kind of thing. Total garbage from a functional standpoint.
Lots of us have headers, no cat or hollowed cat, and various sorts of mufflers. How loud they are depends on the muffler. I had a Blowmaster on my car that way for a while, I absolutely could not stand it, it sounded like I was dragging a 55-gallon drum around behind the car all the time, I got rid of it and sold it to one of my littlest brother's school friends. I hate a bunch of noise anyway, I'd rather have a car that spanks 'em without advertising it beforehand, or pissing off the neighbors all the time.

I missed the air filter part RB, yeah that foam one is junk. I put one on my old 302 Stang, backfired once, foam melted and sucked right into the carb.

I just gotta reply to this one. I had one of those stupid foam air cleaners on an old 72 Charger I had. I was breaking in a 360 I had just gotten done rebulding for it, and I also had a junk Edelbrock performer carb on it (the chrome one, 600 CFM).
I guess either the timing or carb wasn't quite right, and after I stomped on the gas one morning, the car backfired and stalled. I coasted to the side of the road and tried to restart it. No go. Then I notice something really weird....the paint seemed like it was "Bubbling" in the center of the hood....then smoke shortly followed.
I ran out and opened the hood - then FLAMES jumped out and I nearly got burned. There was a campfire on top of my shiny carb!!!
The underhood felt was also "fully involved" as the news media might say. I used my bare hands to rip the air cleaner off the intake and threw it in this guy's front yard, along with the felt.
I was furious to say the least. And injured....one burnt hand- but not too bad, healed in a week or so. I'd rather run with no air cleaner in the sahara desert than have that bomb in my car.

whooooooa nelly! thanx for the info on the air filter guys, im gonna go out and replace it right now.
as for the headers, how much of a power increase should i see with them as oposed to the old manifolds?

Depends on what it is and what else you've done to it...
If it's a stock LG4, you won't see much; but if you don't put headers on it, you won't get much from anything else you ever do to it either. If it's a TPI 5-speed, then you should get around 20 HP.
Headers by themselves aren't a really huge deal, but they sort of enable other mods to have their effect. Without them the engine will remain strangled, so it doesn't matter what other strangulations you remove (cam, intake, heads, whatever), the stock exhaust will still keep the motor from breathing.
