3.1 Showed that emissions machine whose boss!
Hey guys,
I have a 92 RS w/ 3.1 in it, and today it really impressed me and my mechanic. I want to know how good it is if its giving the following readings in the sniffer:
.003 % CO
0 HC (ppm)
327 NO (ppm)
I hear that it is excellent according to my mechanic, but whats making them so good? Is it that my engine is in top notch condition, or do I have good seals and whatnot, or am I using good fuel. The car only has 70 K on it, and I am impressed, the numbers went down from last year's emissions ALOT, and I dind't even do anything to the car to try and bring them down. I'm happy, she could be in cali now LEGAL, but what's makin it be this good, thats what I'm askin.

I'll take a stab at some words of wisdom...
I'd say your engine is in very good mechanical condition, well-maintained, and very likely many details of it were designed to keep producing good numbers like that.
The manufacturers have learned a lot about combustion chamber design, I think that has a lot to do with it. The result is decent power, clean emissions and good gas mileage.
Keep on top of the maintenance and it should be running clean for life. It won't make up for those of us running 10:1, long cams and no catalysts but we need you clean guys out there!

Thanks, so I guess this does mean my crank and my timing chain and pistons and head gaskets are all functioning properly. Good to know, I will keep not doing burnouts and using full throttle, wahhooo!
