Belts...

I have a question about the belts in general... in my dads car which i have at college, they are squeeking alot and its making a good amount of noise...

Could it just be taht the belts need to be "oiled" or lubricated with something like WD-40 or something special?

If they're squeeking, that means they're old and you're about to lose 'em (or one, if you're serpentine), or it's not tensioned properly. Right now, I have a brand new serpentine on my alternator/waterpump/crank that's squeeking like a ****. That's cuz I didn't pull the alternator hard enough before tightening it.

How much would it cost for a shop to replace it? I am at college and it wouldnt be a whole lot of fun for me to loose the belt during a 500 mile trip home...

I guess i might just have to let Exxon or some cheap place do it cause there really isnt anything here at VT
