Carb or ignition problem.

Ok. Monday my car woudn't start. I thought it was a starter problem. and I didnt have the time to fix it. So I sent it up to my dads freind mechanic. He replaced the sires to the starter and shimmed it up and checkied it. He said it wasnt the starter but he didnt know what it was. This got me frustrated. He came back a few ours later and said it was the Carb. Since this is a 5 month old carb I was both sceptical and ennorvated.
The symptoms are It will start. It sounds like crap. IT wont idle well. It stalls if you try and give it gas . It stalls out and spits gas or a fireball from the carb.
Ive triple checked the firing order and I have inspected a couple plugs. They dont look to good but they dont look like they would be causing this.
The Carb thats on there now is a Edelbrock. 5 monthes old.. So I ordered a new Holley which will be here monday. And I guess Ill see what happens then. anyone have any ideas for me? ?
By the way its a 82 Trans Am with a Chevy 305 . Thanks in advance.

i think i'd trouble shoot it a bit more before i go throwing parts at it ,even if the holley is 10 times better carb than the edlebrock. make sure the tune up is good, scan for codes, check compression and go from there. it is usually easier to just replace tune up parts instead of checking, like plugs, and the cost isn't great, and if it's been a while it doesn't hurt. i can't begin to think how you or a mechanic would think a driveability problem could be starter related, but i wasn't there.

I'm with Ed. Don't over-analyze. Has the engine ever run correctly with the Edelbrock carb installed? If so, either something changed with the carb (possible, but not likely) or something changed with the ignition or control system (far more likely).

I'm guessing the carburetor was replaced for a reason - did the original Rochester break in half or something? That's one of the only reasons to discard one in favor of an Edelbrock OR Holley. If the carb was adjusted properly to the engine, I shouldn't have changed in that short a time, but as Ed mentioned, we are not there to diagnose and see all the symptoms. It's just a general statement.

Every idiot I see driving a Honda or Toyota with an American flag stuck out the back window is going in the ditch, so help me Mr. Roosevelt.
