Yes you have to use a Vortec-specific intake.
You can make it bolt up, but the ports won't line up. The head ports are in a different place from older designs. "Vortec" = trade name for "raised ports".

What were you really expecting people to tell you?
If your not willing to buy a vortec specific intake for vortec heads,
buy different performance heads that will work with the intake you got.
Seems to me the only problem is your preconceived (untrue)notions and shortcutting. Thats what is holding you back.

Some outfits, including some GM dealers, are offering Vortec heads that have been drilled to accept old-style bolt patterns. However, not all "old-style" manifolds will even cover all of the port, depending upon how much meat they have around the ports; and no matter what, the ports won't line up properly to allow the flow that is supposed to be the selling point of these heads to start with.
So, best advice is to use a Vortec-specific manifold. In my opinion, those who offer these re-drilled Vortec heads ought to be taken out and shot.
