Autometer electric speedo in a cable driven car?
I did a search and did not come up with any exact answers. Just wondering what i need to get it done. Do i need to change the VSS and add a buffer box from a late model camaro, 89-up i am guessing!?!? Any help would be cool, thanks. In the search i found that Deadbird, Vader, KarpsT/A, and JZA are all pretty good on this subject. I saw a lot of newer guage clusters going into earlier model cars but no autometer installs. I have seen pictures before but no explanations. Thanks for your time-Bryan
Is this going in your '86? If so, there is already a VSS that outputs 4,000 PPM (Pulses Pulses Per Mile, not parts per million).
If not, you'll have to install a VSS and unless the autometer has a buffered input, you'll need to wire a buffer module. They are available from auto recyclers from '86-up TPI cars, '88-up for other cars. (I think I have a spare around here somewhere in case you run into real trouble.) You'll have to provide a separate 12VDC ignition-switched source.
If you're lucky, the Autometer unit is very forgiving and will accept the raw VSS signal.

Hey Vader, thanks for replying! Well, Deadbird helped me out a bit in the Electronics forum so i am a little better off now than before. I am going to try and go with the AutoMeter sending unit. It screws right into the trans and it should act as a buffer i guess. I gave a pretty detailed description over on the other board! Sorry, but if its not too much to ask, could you check it out and give me your input? If not, thats alright too! I think you are right about the Auto Meter sending unit though, it should be fine. The guy on the other line seemed pretty confident about it working with just that. We'll see. Well, thanks for your time-Bryan
