Just put T5 in...need some help

Sorry guys, I'd post this in the trans forum but it just doesn't get any traffic.

Anyway, I spent all day swapping a T5 in place of my 700. I got it in and it runs fine but it developed a very loud, exterior-type, metallic rattle/clanging at around 2000 rpms. It does it in every gear. It also does it in neutral with the clutch in or out.

Does this sound like a trans problem or just a bracket hitting something? I'm thinking that since it does it in neutral, clutch in or out, it can't be a trans problem because nothing in the trans is spinning. What do you guys think?

I'd tend to think it's the clutch... Not sure though.

Sounds like it could be the input shaft, but I'm not sure, I'm not a transmission guy.

Argghh.....I just went and test drove it again. The noise is definitely coming from the clutch area. I'm PRAYING that it's the dust shield rattling.......maybe I left it loose. I'm gonna check it out on a lift tomorrow.

You know on second thought, it's probably not the input shaft since it does it whether the clutch is in or not. Check the bellhousing, and if it's not that it's one of three things, the clutch, the pilot bearing, or the throwout bearing. My guess is it's the throwout bearing. Kind of the same thing happened to me when my throwout bearing/clutch was going out.

kfoley,

When your TO bearing went, did it rattle all the time or only at certain rpms???

My rattle only occurs at 1800-2200 rpms, accelerating or decelerating. BTW, my TO bearing is a brand new GM piece.

dont worry dude, it happened 2 me before, it was the pilot bearing, just replace it and have the fun of your life (sorry but i hate automatic trannys) sure i mean you have to take it all out again, but in the end, every drop of swet will be every kilo of fun you'll have.
i'd suggest, get the roller bearing type from GM, if you like i'll search for the part number.
Fernando.

Yep, happened to me too with a cheap *** bearing from Pep Boys. I'll never buy from them again and never should have in the first place. Get a quality roller bearing from GM.

The pilot bearing will not make noise when the clutch is all the way engaged (pedal out) because the crank and the clutch gear are at the same speed.

If it still makes the noise when the car is sitting still and the trans is in gear, than it can't be the trans, because under that condition, the entire trans is sitting still.

If it does it exactly the same withe the clutch pedal in or out, it's probably not anything to do with the clutch.

From your description, it sounds like the sheet metal cover is not put on right where it's supposed to be "clipped" to the oil pan, and it's rubbing against the crank flange. There are 3 "fingers" made onto it where it clips to the oil pan's rear seal surface, where the pan is rolled back to where it's perpendicular to the block surface; if it's not clipped to the pan properly, it will go between the pan and the crank flange or the back of the flywheel, and make a weird noise.

Good thing you didn't take it all apart and then find out it wasn't the pilot bearing. Summit sells a roller one, pn: SUM-G1700 for $12.99.

Check the mount near the rear of the tranny......on the driver's side.

The rubber bushings in mine were shot causing it to rattle and even THUNK sometimes.

Dealer only part and not all that cheap compared to other mounts.....about $70.00 or so.
