dual snorkel question

Hey I posted in the Carb section but hardly anyone posts in there so I thought I would ask in here. Here goes.

I hope to get some answers to this tonite. I have single snorkel system on my 83 camaro z28. It's a carb engine. I know a dual snorkel or open element are one of the more popular parts people want for their 3rd gen. But I was wondering what other dual snorkel systems can I use besides the HO one that is for my car? Can I use ones from corvette's etc? Im sure the answer might be obvious that I can but I would appreciate the help and answers. Thanks!

Did you perform a search? There's a lot of informatoin on this website, you just have to read a little bit.

Basically you'll find that going with an open element will give you a little better performance but you'll lose some things like keeping the air at the intake colder (when it's hot outside) and warmer (when it is cold outside.

I still went with one and don't regret it for a minute.

As far as another GM dual snorkel goes, I'm sure you could, but since it's not a popular move you'd be hard pressed to find someone who has done it.

You could put on a dual inlet cleaner from an older car, but then you'd have to make some ducting for it to go to the front of the hood. I put an open element on mine and I don't regret it either, and it's much cheaper than a dual snorkel setup.

hey thanx well i might consider going to open element but i was just concerned about getting more cooler air into the engine other than the warm air coming from the engine. Is that really something I should be concerned about or what does everyone else suggest? What else would I need for an open element other than a K&N? Thanks for any opinions. I just need to get my engine breathing better now that i got all the good exhaust stuff out.

The hot air isn't going to hurt your performance much. You'll be gaining much more than you're losing. You don't need to have a K&N open element, you can get the cheap $20 ones from summit. That's what I have on mine.

You know what I might just do that. I was pretty sold on a dual snorkel for a while but yeah cost did worry me alot. 20 bucks for that summit open element sounds great for my wallet. I got one more question...I was thinking you know you can open up the fake flaps in the middle of the hood? I hope you understand what I mean but I was thinking that might be a good idea to get the cool in there anyway with an open element. I would be worried about rain and the elements getting in there tho. How do Ram Air cars work like the new firebirds and such with rain? It would be basically the same right? Let me know what you think for a daily driver or if that is just smart to do on the track? Unless there is some way to make it work so rain and snow doesnt get in there if I open up those flaps. Thanks and more thanks.

well when i did a little research looking for an open element. Im finding a little problem. Well I have the K&N air filter right now that is like 10" diameter and 2 3/4" tall. That summit kit wont work with it because it is 14" in diameter. So is there any kits that will work with it so I dont just waste the 40 bucks i spent on the air filter? the model # is 1450 im pretty sure. Sorry for so many questions. Im just a newbie. But we all start somewhere right?

I assume you think that the 14" filters don't work because they won't fit with HEI, but you can get them with an offset base so that they will.

no, he already has a 10 inch filter, so he wants to use it! i would look at a checker or advance auto for a 10 inch assembly. it would be cheaper to. Also, the cold air induction is great. It was Hot Rod or Car Craft that said in this months magazine that lowering your intake air temp by 10 degrees is worth 1 percent more hp, that doesnt sound like alot but if the under hood air is say 140 and the outside air is 70, thats 7 percent. 21 hp on a 300 hp engine. But if you drive 70 mph on the highway most of the time, the underhood air wont get really hot. I run a open 3"x14" K & N, but i have not tried anything else. you would find more performance orientated dual snorkel units on the internet better than in a junk yard, but youll pay more. i dont think summit or jegs carrys anything like this but search and youll find something.

The old camaro hoods (82 and 83 I think) had the flaps on them, but there were problems with them in the rain getting too much water into the engine. There's a guy on the boards that has a hood like that, but he's done it up so that it's cable controlled so he can open or shut it whenever.

The only hoods I know of that had the operational flaps were the 82 CFI engines. The 83 Z's came with the glass, non functional flaps.

But who knows...:lala:

You're probably right, all I know is they didn't do it long because they had problems with them.

Get the Edelbrock 10" flat base. That's what I'm running with a 3" tall element (If you want to retain the use of your 10" K&N).

Later,

hey thanx guys for the replies...good to finally get a good response to one of my posts. I got a problem tho. I did measure the K&N air filter this time for real and it is 12"x2 3/4". I was a dumba$$ and measured to the inside diameter. hehe...stupid me. I even went to Advanced Auto Parts to see if they had a 12" one but to no avail. Has anyone been able to fit a K&N air filter used in the snorkel system with their open element? I've found 9, 10, 13 1/2, 14, and 15 1/4 elements but no 12". So should I just try and sell this one and just be normal like everyone else and get it that way? Looks like what Im gonna have to do right? later

I'd just go with a regular paper element for your cleaner rather than having to try and find an assembly for it (or whatever it's called). I still have my old K&N filter sitting around somewhere along with the rest of my single snorkel setup....

yeah I could do that...I guess...I just dont like the feeling of wasting the $40 for the K&N you know with working at Pizza Hut. Around here we make less to start out than a BK or McDonald's. So you see I dont have money to throw around. But maybe I can find someone to buy it off me. Maybe I'll just do that. Thanks kfoley and everyone else.

I know what you mean about the money. I make $9/hour and I have to pay for most of my stuff (including tuition for college, and I pay that in cash, no loan for me), so money is tight. I can't spend much on mine either, but slowly it will get faster and look better.
