bent crank
bent crank
I was going through some old pics of my car when i was doing the engine swap, and i found one of the first engine I swapped in for the 2.8 V6. It was a 383 stroker, built up pretty good. Had close to 425 HP, well based on DD 2000, so purly estimated. But after about 5 minutes of run time it started to run crappy. so we shut it off, and and just cranked it over for a few seconds and the damn crank was bent, could see it at the crank pully and damper. so i pulled the engine and there was a hole in the number 3 piston. not from a valve, but right next to the rings, could see right through it.
what could of caused this crap to happen to an engine, it probably had about 1400 miles when i got it from my uncle. It always ran great in his truck, he just wanted a big block.
I only went WOT once around the block, brought it home, and the crank was bent.

really really ****tty balance job is the only thing that comes to mind...a motor thats outta balance...and you run it up WOT....will cause some severe havoch really quick...
or since im reading you installed a 383...another possible thing is...you just put regular sbc crank dampner and flywheel on.. 383s unless internally balanced, require a 400 crank dampner and flywheel..which is externally balanced. hope this bit of info helps yua out dude

unless you checked the run out i doubt if the crank is bent, more likely the pulley or dampner is. i'd suspect a bad piston or incorrect installation of the rod piston assembly, or a flawed part from the maker.

Right... very difficult to bend a crank that way when it's in a motor...
I'd suspect that detonation ate the piston, especially if it happened on the side toward the spark plug.

My uncle built the engine, I am not sure what parts he used, but I do know that it had pretty high compression, maybe about 10.4-10.6, and I was running 93 octane. I do not know if he used a damper and flywheel from a 400 or not. I am sure the crank is bent, I took it out of the engine and you could physically see the bend in it. Needless to say i did not use that damper and crank pully on my new 350, just in case something is wrong with one of them. IMO detonation caused the hole in piston. It is just hard for me to believe that the crank bent.
