Belt Tensioner

Has anyone ever taken their tensioner apart? I took the entire bracket off but I am afraid of the spring flying apart on me if I take the center bolt out. Anyone ever done this? Also can you reverse the tensioner? Thanks.

I've had them apart for repairs. I've had some that sheared/bent the roll pin for the spring anchor point. As I recall, reversing the spring direction would be no major task.
