Starter Motor Panic Question

I have a 89 iroc with a t5 All of you who know anything about these cars will know chevy NEVER made a 89 iroc with a 350 and a manual tranny...

the 89 now holds a 350 Tpi With a manual T5 ( I know about the Lack of Torque capabilities )

the problem is Becuase of this GM made only a 5MT starter for them and if you got the automatic you get the 10Mt starter..

For those illiterate to the starters a 5MT is a small body motor and the 10MT is the larger Removable Magnet with the Phillips head screws in the side..

What model Starter has the 10MT motor and a Small diameter nose assembly ?

My problem is the 5MT I have from the old engine doesn't turn the car over... Its a Fresh rebuild not broken in and when I engage the starter it goes Thunk and then the lights dim alot.. but hte engine doesn't turn . What I did was remove the outer housing and install the starter front end. then I inserted the arm/drive and manually turned the motor with my bare hand...

* Leads one to thing that maybe my motor is just really weak...
Well I guess it could be a Bad ground too or something like that..

I am guessing that the starter is really weak..
Let me know if you have any thoughts on this..

Hrock,

It might be a little extra work, but will teh starter crank the engine with the plugs removed? If not, your engine is either really tight (which probably isn't the case if you can turn the starter armature by hand) or the starter motor is not making power.

Of course, you'll want to double-check your connections, including the ground. Don't overlook the solenoid (copper disc) and main bus from the solenoid to the starter motor. That little screw that holds the bus bar to the solenoid is critical. You might also want to take the starter in to a shop and do a free-running RPM test.

If your final conclusion is that the starter just doesn't have the power necessary by design, you might want to check into a reduction gear type.

There is no starter made like that.

I had a 400/T-5 in my 83 for a long time (hope to again soon!!!!); needless to say, that little weenie stock POS could barely budge that. Whatever problems you have, imagine doubling them; that's what I had. I finally woke up and got a whiff of a hint of a clue, and got the CVR mini-starter with the dual-patter nosepiece. Wow! What a difference!! That thing spins the 400 at least twice as fast as the stock crap could spin the OE 305.

I highly recommend forgetting about any GM product for this application, go get one of those instead. CVR part # 5323.

Has anyone ever tried to use a starter off a 6.2 liter diesel? I just replaced another one this weekend (24.5 to 1 compression ratio and over 400 psi cranking pressure with 379 ci is tough on a starter) and I've always wondered if there is enough room to bolt one of those to a gas V8. They have the offset bolt pattern (outside bolt is closer to the bell housing) with the vertical bolts going through the starter into the engine block. They are about 4 inches longer than a gas V8 starter, but man they should spin a V8 over like nobodies business! Maybe too fast though. I just wondered if anyone had tried one. A rebuilt one from Advance Auto runs about $150.
