need help!! Car doesn't run.

For A whlie now my 1987 iroc 350 tpi has a BIG problem. The car will start then just shut off. If I hold the gas pedal steady it will run. But real crapy. And when I rev it I hear like a pop coming from around the MAF sensor. I have a feeling it is the MAF senor. What do you think?

Has anything been done to the car recently? Did you touch the distributor?

Well I did set the min air idle. And for that I disconnected the RPM wire to get a reading on my volt meter. But I did this after the problem started. THis problem like to stop sometimes and come back.

420,

If the MAF signal is out of range, the ECM will set an error code in 6/10ths of a second. If you don't have the MIL light on the dash staring you in the face, you likely have a different problem, but scanning for codes would be a good idea.

Popping in the intake is usually a sign of incorrect timing or very lean mixture. Check the base timing and make sure the distributor wiring is correct.

Vader has a good point, and I'd like to add to it. If it sounds like it's popping through the MAF, it could be you cam also. Check the timing first and if it doesn't correct the problem, check the oil to see if there are any shavings. I had almost the same problem, I tried everything, timing, TPS, MAF, relays, these were just some of the problems that the error codes were showing me and even after fixing all of those problems it still backfired through the MAF, but now I didn't throw any codes. I broke down and took it to my mechanic because I was totally stumped. He told me that I'd blown out a couple of lobes off the cam. What happened was the previous owner torqued the rockers too tight and pulled the studs out of the heads and wiped out 7 lobes. So not to scare you, but it could be a possibility.
