Test A/C Compressor?
Test A/C Compressor?
Hiya,
I am in the middle of assessing what to do with a 1990 Camaro RS. Lots of memories, so I'm fixing it up for my folks.
The problem is with the Air Condiditioning. It stopped getting cold a few years ago and they essentially parked it during summers.
With the A/C turned on in max setting, there is plenty of airflow and there is a very slight temperature change. The first thing that comes to mind is recharging the AC. However, with the cost of R-12, we'd like to find a way to make sure this is going to fix it. If the compressor is bad no amount of R-12 is going to help.
Is there any way to determine that the compressor is working prior to wasting money? Would the computer report a code if the compressor died out?
Thanks in advance!

First, check to see if the compressor is even kicking in. Chances are it isn't kicking in or is doing so a short intervals. Very likely it's out of freon and the pump is OK. If you don't like the cost of R12, convert to 134a--around 40 bucks from wal-mart with freon, oil, adapters, etc... If you want to do it 'correctly', you can have a shop evacuate the system, check for leaks, etc... However, I've seen many people just do the conversion and never have any trouble. For me, I still use R12--bought a 30 pound bottle before it got expensive.
