Buying AFR 195's. Bad valves? Bad AFR?
I heard the AFR 190/195's come with crappy valves? I did a search and I got like "Yeah i coulnt beleive it, my afr head had crappy valves!"
So i figured i would ask first and formost. I plan on buying a pair of AFR 195CC street heads for their list price, $1250.
Is there anything I need to tell them to do first? Will they do stuff like a 3 angle valve job... or put better valves in it or somthing?

It is highly recommended that you speak to a sales rep there
directly ,, before ordering your heads.
They can build them to suit your needs.
Just tell them what valves etc you want them to use.

Yes, as mentioned above they will either sell them in their stock configuration; or sell you a custom setup; or sell the castings bare.

Before you buy, you may want to check this out:
http://www.ws6transam.org/afrheads.htm
The valves that AFR used on my heads are acceptable quality stainless valves They weigh in at 112 (int) and 113 grams (exh). However, for the price on these valves installed, I found a place with fully reconditioned titanium valves that are perhaps a better deal at $25 and $30 each, respectively. That's only $440 for a complete set of Del West titanium valves! Try http://www.jarvisperformance.com for these valves. You'll save on the price of the titanium retainers too as he has them for $60 a set. You *can* get AFR to offer you a credit on valves, springs, and retainers if you want to go it alone. That's what I'd do if I order from AFR again: Just order their street-port head package, but tell them to give you a credit on valves, retainers, and springs. I got a $50 credit because I didnt want their retainers or springs. I already had my own!
I like my AFRs in theory. I am actively porting them right now. About the only thing I didnt like was the exhaust seat. However, I will be recutting them after I'm done porting anyway.

I just got my AFR 195CC Heads. They are straight Plug style, WIll I need new headers or somthing?
Trending Topics
send them back and get the right heads! I was sent the heads i wanted without the center bolt valve covers and heat sensors tapped! I was pissed! I had to bitch, but they did end up taking care of the problem and shipping! The squeeky wheel gets the grease!
DIRrrr,, never mind! King...did you ask for the angle plug heads? IF not, maybe they will work with you?????? I would call AFR and see if they can help you out by giving you the heads you need!
I ordered AFR 190's, after about 8 weeks i got defective AFR heads of somekind. The intake wouldn't fit and the rockers wouldn't align even with ajustable guideplates. After 6 weeks of phone calls, shipping my parts to california, insults, blatent lies and threats i finally got a call from Rick Spearling explaining how the " stack up of tolerances" might have been to great and no in fact my intake doesn't fit!! This after arguing with a salesman for over a month. When my new heads arrived they were completely different in the ports and they actually fit. Rick fit my headers ( SLP ) and my replacements were L98 style which fit the best. After an initial 1300 dollar investment i wound up spending over 1700. In talking to rick he suggested the upgraded spring package ( i thought he might give them to me for the hell i was put through but i was too tired of fighting to push it). I spent money on shipoping the heads back, adjustable guideplates, new intake and exhaust gaskets. Several months later as i was pulling away from the queens bound toll booths on the whitstone bridge at 2:00 an and my car started to make a loud banging noise and lost most of its power. I made it to the crest of the bridge when i finally stalled. After a Port authority tow truck cracked the nose on my car ( it was too low, they tried two trucks so i cant fault them) I got to wait 45 min, in the middle of knowhere for a regular tow truck that only cost me 100 bucks. The next day i found a cleanly broken rocker stud on the #8 exhaust. Add another 50 bucks for ARP studs and a whole day installing and inspecting. That was my experience with AFR. Oh yeah, if you get a salesman named Tony, just hang up!!

I can't beileve the AFR complaints, wow. For the price no1 should have to put up with any of that. I hear anyway that they are overrated and not needed. You can make great or better power with cheaper heads.
actually, i disagree, the afr products are great, every company has customer service issues, they flow excellent numbers for the volume of their ports. if i had the cash id buy their products, but yes they are expensive.

You might not disagree if you have had dealings with AFR. I bought them because they were so great, and had great flow numbers for the size of there ports. The heads i have now seem fine, nicely made, when made correctly. There is way more to a product than flow numbers. What if those wonderful heads cracked in half once overheated.
I run SLP 1 3/4's i don't know about hookers but i was going to have to dimple the SLP's with the strait plugs
