First verify TDC ( Top Dead Center ) for #1 cylinder. One the closest plug hole to the front on the driver's side ( #1 ) take the plug out and as you rotate the engine, wait until you feel air pushing your finger out of the spark plug hole.....Watch the timing mark on the balancer....when it's lined up with 0 ZERO degrees BTDC on the timing tab, this is when you should feel the air coming from the #1 cylinder. If it DOESN'T do this, rotate it again, until the timing mark comes around to the ZERO mark again. This will be TDC#1.
Now install the distributor cap. The terminal that the rotor is pointing at is NOW for the #1 cylinder. So wire the spark plugs up starting here with #1 , going through the firing order.
This is about the fastest / easiest way. If you have a preference where you want the #1 terminal to be, simply pull the distributor out, and move the rotor so when you install the distributor the rotor is pointing towards that terminal, actually a little before it. As you drop the distributor down into the engine, the dist gear will mesh with the cam gear and rotate a bit...this is normal, just compensate with where you have the rotor when dropping the distributor in.
