88 Bird 2.8 MFPI * FIXED * Yeah
88 Bird 2.8 MFPI * FIXED * Yeah
HiYaAll,
Had major problems with the bird.
Symptoms: Rough idle, no power, missing really bad, in general car ran like crap. Car would start up then die, restarted again then it would die. Finally after about 10 trys the car would start but run like crap.
Diag'd by pullin individual wires at the dist cap. Cylinders 2 & 4 showed no change while engine running. Then pulled the plugs on 2 & 4 which were wet with gas.. ah ha. Plugs, wires and
cap are new. Replaced the IAC, car ran a little better, that cured the start and restart problem along with plug foul.
So I pulled the injectors/rail. Plugs 2, 4 and 5 were absolutely clogged at the injector inlet with miniscule rust particles.
Pulled the fuel filter and spilled out brown gas.
Replaced 3 injectors from a donor car, along with fuel filter.
Whala.. car runs purrfect. This also cured the intermittent code 33 or 34, cause I replaced the MAF and no change which had me confused. So look at what pours out of the fuel filter first and if it hasn't been changed in a long time, those contaminents will filter into the injectors. The job is actually not hard to do, just a 10,12,13 mm sockets, and 25 torx bit to remove the fuel line connector from rail. Just thought I'd mention this fix as I swapped out many parts, distributor, coil, ecu, water temp sensor to no avail. Fortunately PEP BOYS will let you return electrical parts.
This car almost had me beat.
