water pump leaking

for some odd reason, my water pump started leaking. it doesnt leak untill it sits for a while overnight. every morning when i back it out of the garage, theres a little pool of green liquid sitting under where the car was parked. ive traced it to the gasket on the back of the pump. this was a new gasket too, i thought it was odd that it was like just plain old paper thin cardboard, this is the gasket right? ive re tightned the bolts as much as possible and it stopped for 2 days. the only things i can think of is either this was the wrong gasket, or i was suppost to use some kind of sealant WITH the gasket. it could also be that i have the heater hoses screwed up. one goes from the intake manifold, to the oil cooler, out the other side, then to the heater core (the bigger fitting), then out the otherside with the smaller fitting straight to the radiator. does this sound alright? is it possible i have the oil cooler hoses backwards? every thing was workin fine for like a whole month....

I am pretty sure that you are supposed to use some sort of sealant with the gaskets that are provided. I have a tube of goo at home from when I put my water pump in. I think the stuff that I used was blue.

make sure the mating surfaces are clean and free of old gasket material and just put a thin layer of rtv to help them seal. Dont wad rtv all over the gaskets and pump, itll mask the coolant ports in the block when you tighten down the pump.

As posted on the "Cooling" board, if you didn't put a sealant on the lower water pump bolts, that could be where it's leaking. Those bolts go into the cooling passage an are known to leak around the bolts.

shouldn't need sealer between two machined surfaces. i use high tack to hold the gasket in place while i install the parts. use non hardening sealer on the bolts. is this a new WP or the one that's been on the car since forever? if it's an old pump your problem most likely isn't the gasket but the shaft seal in the pump and it's leaking out the weep hole. if so replace the pump.
