how much power can i anticipate on gaining on my 87 t/a 5 speed if i added an edelbrock performer intake and a vacuum advance distributor with an edelbrock carb. i have a full exhaust with heddman headers and no ct and a flomaster muffler.

oh yeah , its a 305

probably not much, maybe a few horsepower. If your planning on getting a hot cam, then the addition of a good carb and a performer rpm intake or maybe even a single plane would probably increase performance alot over the stock intake. But iof teh engine is mostly stock, then you wont see a substantial difference replacing them.

i had a 305 with the performer package on it. manifold, cam, lifters
with a holly 600 cfm and vaccum advance dist. and dynomax headers. car ran good for what it was. i ran a 14.1 with that setup but i think what got me there was the 3:73's and the 700/r4 with the shift kit. and lot of tuning.

Check out what car craft got out of a LG4 with the performer. Not to bad.

If you really want to improve power, go ahead and get an aftermarket manifold (Weiand Action + or GMPP probably better choices, though). Save the money you'd waste on a carb and distributor and put an aftermarket cam in it. A Comp or Crane roller would cost less than new carb & distributor, and would address what is really holding the engine back (the carb isn't - trust me).

Get a dual-snorkel air cleaner. The stock single-snorkel piece is junk.

The mag used non-CC stuff on their dyno engine because that is easier than setting up a CC system in a dyno room. For a 305 (or 350 or 383, for that matter), there's more power, fuel economy, and driveability in your stock carb than there is in any aftermarket or non-CC carb.

I have a Perf RPM under the stock hood with a drop base open element air cleaner.

It's important to note that Performer scored 20hp over the stock LG4 intake, and another 15more hp with the Perfromer RPM all on the stock cam. That's saying alot... I have that article scanned at www.inter-scape.com/ray/305buildup.htm BTW if you want to read the whole thing... If I were you I would swap the cam too while I had the intake off there. Unfortunately for you it's a little more expensive thanks to 87 being a roller motor. Maybe you can score a stock LT1 cam or something similar for cheap.
