Cold Weather Blues...

Ok, I have been noticing a problem with my TA. This is my first winter with it, so Im not sure how it is supposed to act. First of all, if it sits for an entire day, and I go to start it, it will start right up, then the idle will drop and the car will shut off. If I start it right back up again, all is well. It idles fine, "chokes" cuz of the cold and all. No problem. Whats up with the dying on the first try thing? Even if I try to save it by giving her some gas, she still dies. Also I noticed when the fuel pump is priming, its kinda noisy. Now the temp around here has been in the teens for quite some time, so could that be affecting it? The cold seems to effect everything else, especially electrical stuff. So is this something I should worry about? or something I should just blame on it being so extremely cold. Oh yeah, once the car is warmed up for a few minutes, it runs like a bat out of hell. Runs perfect. SO I dont think the fuel pump is really going bad, cuz my fuel pressure is good. Let me know what you all think.

Cruiser,

You might have a sluggish IAC control. It's also possible that the CTS is a little off calibration, ot the MAT is not working. They are easy enough to check with an ohmmeter.

As for the IAC, if the engine will idle at normal RPM, it is obviously working, but may be a little dirty and sluggish. I'd try cleaning the throttle body and IAC air passages first. If the problem persists, you may want to remove the IAC, disassemble the pintle from the unit, clean everything, apply ONE drop of a light engine oil to the pintle rack gear, then reassemble and install it. It only takes a very little bit of dirt and varnish to slow down the IAC operation, and the cold temperatures probably aren't helping speed up the process at all:

Hey thanks vader..never though of some of those suggestions. Im pretty sure my MAT is ok, because I checked it last time I had my plenum off and all. What/where exactly is the CTS??? Some sort of temp sensor? Where is it and is there a procedure to test it? As for my IAC. It is only a few months old. So Im hoping its still clean. I had my plenum off not too long ago to replace my egr, and I really cleaned the TB out while it was apart. But, those are still good suggestions, so as soon as its not -20 and snowing outside, Im going to check them. I have my multi-meter and tools up at school, so I can do it. Let me know if you or anyone else has any more suggestions. Right now I just cant wait for it to get warm, so I can see if these problems are just cold related.

Like I said, it only stalls when I first go out and start it. Its a clean stall. Starts up, shuts right off. Then at the next turn of the key, it fires up like nothing is wrong.

Thanks,
Justin

i have that EXACT same problem. but one thing that leads me to believe it might not be the IAC valve. and that is when it starts i can press the gas, and the car will rev up to 1500-2000 rpms and immediatley die.. could that still be caused by the IAC?
