87' 305 TPI Running like Crap

Please Help me guys.

I have an 87 Camaro Z28 with a 305 TPI, and the car is running like crap. First the cars is nearly impossible to start when cold. She idles iratically, misses throughout driving range, and is very hesitant. Also to make matters worse, when the pedal is depressed to the floor, the car surges really bad and feels like it is going to jerk itself in half. Also the lifters rattle pretty bad when the pedal is pushed to the floor. Any ideas guys, I would really appreciate an idea on where to start.

Thanks in adavance !!!

is your timing way off? Are all the spark plug wires connected tightly? Sounds to me like you just need to whip out the timing light and get that motor in sync.

No Codes

I checked last night and it is not throwing any codes. I plan to try to time it tomorrow. What sensors would you recommend checking? Thanks for all the help!

MAF sensor, MAT, IAC, TPS...but if you arent getting any codes then i dont think its a sensor. check fuel pressure and timing and let us know how that turns out. Also like rezinn said, check fuel filter.

Honestly I don't see any reason why it would be doing that besides the timing.. Unless, however, you have a LOT of condensation in your gas tank and there's a lot of water in your gas lines.. My F-150 has a slight leak on the top of the gas tank and sometimes (usually in the spring when it's humid, but happens a lot in the winter also) it will run extremely rough, just like you explained there. But it will go away after about 5 to 8 minutes.. Just because of the water that got in there. It's most likely one of those two things.

Timing and Sensors. My 87 TPI had those problems. Rotor, Cap, and plugs/wires too.

Oh, and check for carbon buildup.

Thanks for all the help that you all have given me thus far. I have completely tuned the car up doing the following:

Plugs
Cap and Rotar
Fuel Filter
Oil Change
Air Filter
EGR Valve

The car is running alot better, but now the SES is throwing code 34. Any ideas as to what to do next???

Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lala:

She's Running Like New

I found the code decoder on the main page, and bought a new MAF Sensor for my Z28. She is running perfect now. I want to thank all the guys who helped me diagnose my car.

:hail: Thanks Guys

Another ThirdGen.org success story. Now if we could only get Gerhardt Schroeder, Jacques Chirac, and his buddy Putin to log in, we'd get them straightened out, too.
