90 3.1,

Welcome Aboard!

I have a fairly comprehensive list of ECM error codes, ABS error codes, and even later PCM codes, but I don't have a lot of data on the early SIR systems.

What I can tell you is that the lamp is used as a diagnostic. When the ignition is first turned on, the SIR system scanns the sensors and loads connected to it. The lamp should flash once for each sensor/load in the system. If the lamp remains on, there is a problem with the control, a sensor, or the firing coil in the steering column, or one of the electrical connections in the system.

Whatever you do, disable the system before you perform any diagnosics or testing. You'll have to disable any radio Theft-Lock codes, then disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes. After that, you should be able to safely inspect electrical connectors, etc. Connectors are usually easily identified since they are molded in a bright yellow plastic. Don't disturb these connections or the wiring while the battery is connected, or you might be shopping for a new steering wheel center pad. Worse yet, an inflating air bag can casue serious injury, especially in these earlier models.

I solved similar problem in my brother's Jeep Cherokee 1998.

We pulled off the steering wheel.

Problem could be at:

-AirBag connector (yellow) in the steering wheel center (back). Dissasemble with care = put your face off the air bag way, or you will need a pencil for drawing a new face.
-Special wire "coil" (SIR coil) damaged o disconnected caused by front wheels overturned (it was our problem). We welded the 5 wires in this coil and ready! air bag + horn.
-Corroed connection at fuse box (back).
-Fuse failure.
-Bad connection at airbag sensor.

- Others are the wire lines/cables (too low possibility).

Good lucks,
Denis V.
