just got a 85 TA and I think I'm going to make a drag car out of it, can I remove the sway bars and still be ok on the track. this is going to be a track only car and I'm looking to shed every ounce I can from it.
Yep, you can toss the sway bars. There are a lot of little things you can do. I'm too lazy to list as many as I know, but when the search is back up, try a search.
There were TONS of good threads on weight loss in the various boards here.

Until you do some good rear suspension changes, keep the rear sway bar. It helps keep both wheels on the ground to improve traction.
As mentioned above, do a search through the archive for weight reduction. Since it's going to be a drag only car you can remove anything and everything that doesn't make you go fast.
Basic stuff:
Front and rear bumpers
Crash bar from within the doors
Every piece on interior. Carpet, seats, stereo, etc
Front sway bar
Convert from power steering to a manual steering box
Remove all the wiring and rewire for only what's required.
The list is endless. It's up to you to decide how far you want to go.
I've taken mine to the limit. I've stripped down the steering column to just a shaft (10 pounds reduced). Remove the fuel tank and installed a 4 gallon fuel cell (tank was 25 pounds). The only thing still original inside the car is the plastic dash and dash pad.

Actually, I'd leave the rear sway bar on. It will keep the body from twisting so bad on a launch. Without it, you are more likely to lose traction on one tire. Beware, though, after you remove the front, you might want to do a couple practice launches to get used to it. On a hard launch, the car may pull side to side a bit. If you are going to drive your car on the street, I wouldn't recommend removing either sway bar. The car will handle like crap. I drove my car for about a week with no sway bars, and I decided to put them back on after I was making a U-turn, and managed to scrape the rocker panel on the ground. The car will lean awfully into turns.
