oil pump pickup

Okay, im getting a lot of different opinions from a lot of different people. I bought a rebuilt motor that came with an oil pump but no pickup. I am also told that the pickup needs to be welded. Where does it need to be welded? To the pump, to the pan, or to the block. I've also been told it doesnt need to be welded, just bolted to a main cap, which doesnt seem to make much sense, but again, i dont know my *** from a whole in the ground. I kinda wanna get this done soon so i can get started this weekend. Thanks for all the help.

oil pump gets bolted to rear main bearing cap.
pickup gets inserted into hole in oil pump.
it's a good idea to tack weld the oil pickup tube to the oil pump when you stick it in.

Black,

Another option is to weld a brace to the oil pickup and bolt it to the oil pump lower cover. The primary idea behind all of this is to prevent the pickup from falling off the pump (it can happen), thereby starving the engine for oil. That usually results in a catastrophy for the engine.

e-man, what the hell is that, whats the PN and how much does it cost? This seems to make my life a lot easier then, if its just welding the pickup to the pump, a machine guy said 10 bucks to do it. He said i needed the pan or somethin too so that he could check the depth or something like that. Hey, i dug a hole! No, no, thats my ***, sorry.
