question about turning engine over by hand

When I crank my engine over by hand with a socket on the crank bolt do I go clockwise or counterclockwise?

Clockwise as you are looking at the front of the engine...

Ok, so i turn it clockwise or right as if I was tightening the bolt? Everyone agree? Will I break something if I go the wrong way?

You will only loosen the bolt if you go the wrong way.

You will only break the bolt if you go the right way.

Don't use the bolt. Take the bolt out, remove the balancer, and use a crank socket. I'd hate for you to be the next person making the familiar "ARGHHH! My crank bolt broke off!!! (or stripped)" post.

Bahhh...Use the crank bolt, but only if you remove all of the spark plugs!! Much less resistance that way

I agree...don't use the bolt. My friend broke one off in his crank trying to do that and it sucked! I'd get one of these if you don't wanna remove your balancer to rotate your motor without breaking the bolt.

That's summit racing part# pro-66782, engine rotation adapter. It bolts to the balancer after you remove the crank pulley.

If you're not going to do a lot of hand positioning of the crank and/or don't want to remove the balancer, use a strap wrench on the crank sheave.
