i am torn between the decision of a 355 or 383, the car is a daily driver in the summer, but i wanna be able to pull ls1s and all that. i also want to use my world s/r torquer heads seeing i just got them. what do you guys think? ill have a extreme 274 cam but was thinkin of down grading to a 268, i have a 3000 stall, turbo 350 and 3.73 gears. i am only 17 and am on a budget.

Go for 383" the only thing you will regret is why you didnt go for 396 or bigger.........But on a budget the 383" is the way to go....

i dont agree. 383 is more of a hassle and can be more expensive b/c of the parts you need and the clearancing that needs to be done. If you are on a budget a nicely built 355 will smoke ANY ls-1 out there for less money and hassle than a 383.

about the heads... i would work them a little either way... whether you decide 383 or 355. They would work good on a 355 but worse on a 383. and If you worked them they would work great on a 355 but good on a 383... you see where im going with that?

Watch what kind of generalizations you make. One of the LS1's at Thunder Racing just went 10.56@128 a few weeks back, naturally aspirated and stock displacement. The car is also daily driven. I seriously doubt the average "built" 355 runs middle 10's and dynos at 460 rear wheel horsepower. I can guarantee you that a "built" 355 isn't going to be running those times on ported stock castings like this LS1 is, either.

yea and thats not your average ls-1 either. and plus you could fairly easily have a 355 up to 460 rear wheel horses, I dont seem to have any problems smokin an ls-1. that has nothing to do with this topic tho. He wants to beat stock ls-1s. And yes i did say ANY ls-1 but you know what i mean't.

Actually, I didn't know what you meant or I wouldn't have posted what I did . And I'm not denying that you can build a 355 to put out the numbers that Jason's LS1 T/A does, but you're never going to do it with any factory production SBC head. I'd also wager that the LS1 would be tamer in traffic than a GEN 1 SBC at equal power levels. If you were to go to an 18 degree GEN 1 head, you might stand a better chance at equaling the LS1 in power and streetability, but then you're dealing with custom headers and intakes and much more $$$ than even LS1 parts cost. But when you get into the boosted applications, that's where the good ol' SBC hands the LS1 its ***

Although it is definitely not a budget engine, you might want to check out the latest issue of Super Chevy. They are claiming 530 horses out of a 383 with EFI and fast burn heads. If you look at the cover it says something like 383 + EFI = 350 horses. From what I read in the article, they meant 530 horses(!)

well i'll agree that you'll NEVER make close to those numbers with any production head on a SBC and the LS-1 probly would be tamer. I'm Just a stubborn small block man.:hail:
