code 34 in an '87 L-98
code 34 in an '87 L-98
a friend of mine at work recently picked up an '87 Iroc with the L-98 engine.....it's throwing a code 34, he said it's running rich, and idel is bouncing between around 600-650 rpms.
He's tried changing the MAF, the ECM, and several other sensors.....I'm not sure if/how the exhaust is modified, but this is shortly after he put a Flowmaster cat-back on it. All the smog equipment is there and connected....I'd have to take another look to see if it has headers or the stock manifolds (speaking of which, could I get pics of various headers with AIR installed, and a pic of the stock manifolds?)....
What should we be looking at in finding the cause of the code?

The problem is in the MAF sensor circuit. Check the relays...there are three relays by the master cylinder. One is fuel pump, one is MAF power and the other is MAF burnoff. My T/A was having similar symptoms...come to find out the MAF power relay had high resistance across the power in/out terminals with the relay closed. This caused low voltage supply to the MAF, which of course resulted in low voltage FROM the MAF. I would recommend changing the MAF power AND burnoff relays-GM has an updated burnoff relay. My burnoff relay got water inside it between the contacts and kept constant power going to the burnoff circuit in the MAF-dead battery AND a fried MAF!
Good luck!

Good luck!

Relays definately like to go bad...and some times they will run you in circles!
Don't have a pic, but...the three relays are situated as:
The relay closest to the brake booster is fuel pump relay.
The middle relay is MAF power.
The relay farthest to the left is MAF burn-off.
Hope this helps,
Darrell
