Spark plug wires
Spark plug wires
Jey guys i got some pretty old saprk plug wires in my car right now. I was just wodnering what kind of gains i can expect by putting on some new msds(there aobut 55 bucks). Or, will this just be good for the engine. Thanks
Instead of just guessing, test your wires with an ohmmeter. If you get more than 650 ohms/foot, they may be failing. If you need replacments, get a decent set of 8mm silicone supression wires. Carbon filaments are just fine, even for performance engines. If the old wires test O.K., clean them, apply silicone grease to the boots at each end, and reinstall them.

You won't gain anything at all if the ones you have are working OK.
The usual ways that plug wires fail are either by the center conductor breaking, which Vader's test is for; or by the insulation failing and allowing the spark to "leak" out, which is what heat and age cause to happen to them.
I like the Taylor Spiro-Pro wires myself.... they fit, unlike alot of others whose boots are huge and end up against headers and things; and they come in black, so they don't turn into this gaudy thing with giant greasy handprints on them, like alot of the brightly-colored ones do.

Vader has a really good point.
I picked up a set of Taylor 8mm wires and 3 out of the 9 wires in there were bad. Resistance was 18K, 25, and 180k which is waaay to high. I brought them back and he hands me another box. 2 were bad in that one! (I brought my ohm meter with me).
Not sure if Taylor just had a bad run or not but I'll be sure and test them everytime I pick up a new set for now on...
