changing the firing order
i have been reading that you can change the firing order. i want to try the firing order from the ls1. i read that the crank configuration is the same, but are the camshaft lobes in the same spot. just wondering if anyone has tried/read about this change?

No the cam is different; the combination of where the pistons are, and what the valves are doing in relation to the pistons, is what determines the firing order.
Look at the order 18436572; without changing the crank, the only thing you can do is to swap 2 cyls that are 4 positions apart in the order. e.g. you could exchange #4 & #7 by grinding the cam differently and putting the wires in the dist in the correct order (18736542)

yea chevyhipo talks about it and says the ls1 is 18726543 and ours is 18436572 they change the 72 with the 43. i figured it would require a cam change but they make no statement about it.

Why would you change the firing order? Is there any gain from doing that?

according to chevy hipo yes there is a gain to be had. There is a slight gain to be had and a vibration reduction. It doesn't really give specifics though

If you change the firing order, you still have that problem, you just move it from cylinders 5 and 7 to cylinders 1 and 3. I would think all you really get from that is having to buy a custom ground cam

If you're running a dual plane intake, you'll never see a difference. Same with the 1-3 change that black89ws6 pointed out. If you're running a single plane, the only gains you'll see are above 5500 RPM.
Pros have tried it multiple times, and the HP/$$ ratio just isn't worth it.
