Jacobs ignition installed
Well, the Jacobs ignition is installed. Along with a Jacobs cap, wires, and AC plugs.
Before I started it was running OK. First we put in on the Snap-on 'machine' and the ignition was working good.
Installed the plugs first, and drove it. No change. Opened up the gap a little bit and it idled rough. Opened up the gap to 60 and installed the Jacobs stuff. The first thing I notice is how quick it starts. It idles smoother, can hardly tell it has much of a cam. Throttle response is improved greatly. The 4500-5000 rpm wall seems to be gone. It will rev to 6000rpm+ without a problem. It seems to run stronger as well. I'm impressed.
With a stock engine, the stock HEI is probably plenty good. However, if you have done some engine mods, an aftermarket system might be a good idea. FYI, I got the system for 40 bucks used--800 miles on the system and totaled the truck.

I've been wondering about there ignition stuff . If its as good as it claims in the magazine ads . Of course my car would prabably not benefit much on it . But I've been curious about the real benefts for a V8er ...Glad to hear your satisfied .

Which system is it? I got the Omnipac in the '97-timeframe, thought it helped a little but couldn't point to any particular quantitative performance improvement. I was using a converted points distributor for the trigger.
I took it off the '57 last year in favor of the HEI/Crane HI-6. I was trying to solve an intermittent high RPM cut-out problem. I think I've found it now - valve springs.

"suppposed" be a little better than the omni-pac. It's the Omni-Magnum. I forgot to add the mileage increase. So far, with 150 miles on it I can see the mileage increase is going to be substantial. If I can get it up over 20mpg, I'd be happy since my daily driver(91 jimmy) gets around 22.

I've heard alot of good things about the Crane HI-6. Anyone else have this or heard of it?? I know its digital instead of the outdated solid state analog technology, but as far as quality and how it compares to jacobs, MSD, Mallory and the like?
