changed oil...ticking sound
changed oil...ticking sound
Hello everyone.
I have a question for you... I changed my oil a few days ago. I must have not looked at the container all that well because I used 5W-30. After about an hour of driving I start to hear some ticking. I drove the car about 50 miles with no change in sound. I finally realize that I used to 5W-30 and change the oil back over to a quality 10W-30. The car sat for about 20 minutes at idle and I drove it hard for about 10 minutes after the change, and the noise didn't change. The sound seems like the lifters droped the lighter oil and have yet to pump full with the new 10W-30.
PS... My oil pressure with the 5W-30 droped to about 20psi at an idle and 30psi on the go pedel. The oil pressure went back up to the normal 25-30 psi at idle and 35-40 psi when moving.
Any ideas, anyone know if I am on the right track?
Thanks for all you wisdom.

If my oil pump would have went, should the oil pressure still be normal? If my pump went and the lifters were getting no oil, then all of them would be making noise. I have never had one die on me. After talkin to my mechanic and getting a closer listen, he thinks that one of my rockers on the passenger side has worked loose.
Thanks for the input.
Forgot to mention that I have driven the car about 350 miles far this week and everything other than the sound is normal.

20PSI at idle should be plenty. Remember that the factory pressure gauges aren't all that accurate. If you can, connect a separate mechanical gauge to test pressure. If pressure is correct, you may have loosened some sludge with the lighter oil and it is blocking an oil passage or lifter. Was the light oil dirty when you drained it?
If the pressure is good, and the problem persists, I'd suggest removing the rocker cover on the offending side and trying to readjust the lash hot and running. You should also get a good look at oil delivery when you do this. If one or more of the push rods is not oiling the rocker, you'll have some work to do.

but if u adjust the valve lash while the motor is runnin, wont u get oil all over the place? this is the only thing i do not get. i know to set the valve lash when the motor is off but why when its runnin? cant u just start the motor after its all done and then go back inthere and check it again?
Well, you might get oil all over the place. Then again, you can purchase oil deflector clips that attach to the rockers just for this purpose. A set is only about $6-10. They still allow oil flow, but keep it off the fenders.

Thanks for all the tips guys.
The oil was a bit dirty when I removed it.
I took the valve cover off on the right side to see if any rockers were loose with no luck. Some people that have listened to it think the sound is on the left and others the right. I think the sound is coning from the center??
I think the cam is shot. The car only likes to tach up to about 3500 before the tach startes to shudder. The car still seems quite strong.
Not a big deal, I have a big *** cam that will be goin in it next week. I hope it stays in the 50 or so next week, I need to ride the CBR to work now, lol.
Thanks again guys.

nah, you adjust em at idle, i did it this way, next to no oil flew around, its when you bring the rpms up that oil will fly all over, this is the only way i adjust my valves, tighten till tap goes away, .25 turn and lock it
Well... she died on me on the way to work this morning. i had a hard time getting her started this morning, and she stalled abot 1 mile from my house. The car would not start back up. I got the car towed home and messed with it before tearing it apart. The car cranks but it cranks slow then fast then slow, ect, making a noise that sounds like a broken timing chain. When removing the pully on the crank, I can hear a grinding noise from the timing chain area. I think I'm on the right track, I am just getting ready to ride to the part store and get a timing set and a hb puller.
Car has about 130k on it. I removed the cover last night and removed the chain without removing either gear. The car gear is missing about half of the teeth and is damn near smooth on about hafh of it.
I will post some pics of it when I get home.
Thanks for the help guys.
