building a 350 for street/strip

I was wondering what would be a good setup for a 350 to put out about 300hp / 300-350ft/lb tq, for a street/occasional strip car? and is it possible to get it to be real real real quite?

P.S. and room for future mods :-)

For a mild street/strip motor I'd use this combonation:

Vortec heads (can't beat them for the money)
XE262H cam
Dual plane intake
700cfm carb

This would make a good solid 350+ hp and 375+ tq.

*Note those numbers are estimates only.

Any ideas on what this would cost?

New upgraded vortec heads for higher lift: $640 @ SDPC
Comp Cams XE 262 H: $130ish @ Summit
Weiand Dual Plane Intake: $120 @ Summit
Holley 750cfm 4160 Carb: New $400, used $50 + $20 for rebuild kit
Rotating Assembly from Summit: $650
Block plus machine work: $500
Rocker arms, pushrods: $85
Oil Pump & pickup: $40
Oil Pan: $100
Gasket Set: $40
Other Misc. Items: $250

So I'd guess it comes out to about $1500 to $2000 and of course this includes all new parts. If you reuse old parts you can save a lot of money.

The only thing I see wrong with that.Is the intake. You would need a vortec style intake.Which is around 200 not 120.

Oh, sorry about that I forgot. An Edelborck Performer intake for Vortec's will be about $160 IIRC. I wish Weiand (a division of Holley) had a Vortec style intake similar to their Stealth manifold.

Ok I don't want to say vortecs are bad but I was kinda hoping to use a TPI setup on the 350. what would have to be done to get it to 300hp/350tq with a TPI setup?

NOOO TPI... TPI is not good for strip at all... maybe strictly street. It hits a wall at about 4500 rpms.... no power after that and its more of a hassle than a carb.

Stock TPI is a no no on the strip, you hit a wall at about 4500rpm which is not good for drag racing. If you go with aftermarket TPI, it willl cost you an arm and both your legs... Plus TPI is harder to tune than a carb. For your application, I really think you should run a good holley carb.

Maybe try a Stealth Ram combo. Say Trickflow 23* heads, something about like the GM HOTcam kit, and of course the Holley Stealth Ram intake.

That should surpass your power goal. As to how quiet it is, try running a dynomax catback or something, not sure on exactly what the quietest models are though...

Nevermind how much power you want. The question is what do you want to run??

I really wasn't planning on running anything specific, I was just looking for something that could out do my friend's cars and give me some bragging rights. I thought that the 300hp/300-350ft/lbs tq would do that nicely. I don't think that I would be making a lot of trips to the drag strip so the car would be 95% used on the street which is why I was thinking of TPI over the carb but that was just a thought in itself.

you could get 15-20 mpg with a carb n the right combo... the aftermarket TPI wont be worth the money it costs... the carb is much easier to trouble shoot and if you want to go for HI-PO in the future all you might have to change is the intake depending on what carb you get... or just the carb, depending on what intake you want... with TPI youd have to trash the whole thing you spent all that money on.
