Speedometer Problem

On my 92 Camaro 3.1 V6, I'm experiencing an intermittent speedo problem. When it is cold outside, the speedo does not work or works erratically. Warm temperatures & when the car is warm, the speedo works OK. At least this is what my son reports. ( I haven't driven the car to see what is actually happening.) Can anyone offer some possibilities to check out? Also, would this car have an electronic or mechanical speedometer. It is an analog gauge.
Thanks, FJK

Electronic speedo. The VSS is in the tailshaft of the transmission. Two wires run from it to the ECM. The ECM buffers the signal, uses it itself and sends two pulse streams out. One pulse stream goes to the speedo to drive it. The other pulse stream goes to the cruise control to handle that.

Observing the functionality of the cruise control and/or a scan tool on the ECM can help narrow down which component/wire may be causing the problem.

RBob.
