What with Stock Vortec heads to get low 12s in the quarter mile

350 2 pc rear main stock bottom end, 3.73 posi and 5 speed....
i was thinking
hooker long tubes, custom y pipe, any catback, Msd 6al, blaster 3 coil and 8.5 wires, holley 4150 750 DP carb with a holley blue pump and any AFPR, Performer RPM air gap intake manifold with an XE284 cam and lifters package, have the heads machined for screw in studs and guideplates, use a metal shim for a head gasket and run comp rockers, comp timing chain....any input would be greatly appreciated...
thx

I think it's .450. I did use the valve springs that are matched to my cam. Not the stock springs. More than likely if you are wanting low 12's they will have to be machined.

kfoley says...and I quote...."The Xtreme Energy cams are a great line of cams. The most popular setup is a 355 with Vortec heads, Performer RPM intake manifold and a XE274 cam. You can knock down low 12's with this combo when tuned correctly. It's also an inexspensive build too and puts out a little over 400 hp and 420 tq.

Hey, 94-6spd, do you have an e.t. for the 83 w/out the spray-just on the motor? I am building 355 vortec head setup with perf rpm intake, comp 292 magnum cam, 1.6 rr, 750 dp, 15/8 header, ypipe, flowmaster, no cat, flat top pistons, holley blue pump, 700r4 w/ super transkit, stock susp now(future plans spohn Torque arm and lca's) w/ 275/60/15, 4.56 posi. Not sue what will run when done. Trying to compare similar setup to estimate.

Look at Ponykiller. he's got relatively stock vortec heads with the xe274 and an rpm intake, using 3.73's as well... he's knocking down low 12's all day long.

When my vortecs were stock, I measured them to take about .490" safely

I don't have a time just on motor yet but I am planning a trip to the track either this weekend or next weekend. Have you thought about putting a single plane on it with that 292 cam? It would probably help your times a little.

check out the specs for my firebird, before I blew the motor thats exactly the setup I had, and it ran dead even with a friends firebird that ran 12.40's @110. My new motor should be good for 11's, but of course that with canfield heads and a solid cam

No, Actually the day I ran 12.36 @ 110 my 60' times were 1.97's and 2.0's. That in my opinion isn't very good with a brand new set of MT et drag slicks. I was spinning the slicks all the way through first gear and was going sideways. The next time I went to the track I decided to put the lca's in the stock location instead of using the spohn relocation brackets. When I did this my 60' times dropped dramatically. I wasn't impressed with the relocation brackets at all. The rest of the track times were at 1/8 mile tracks.
