Help quick!!!...car has been sitting and now isnt running

I have a problem. I had my '89 RS sit for about 6 months. I did not add fuel addative or anything. The battery went dead and we have been charging it for a while so it gets enough juice to start.

Well I got enough juice to start and drove the car around the neighborhood last night for about 10-15 minutes. It started again today and I drove it down the street and back. When I was in my driveway I put it in nuetral while rolling and revved it to 2500-3000 RPMs and put it back in drive...when I pulled in the garage the car RPMs started bouncing and dropped slowly to 250 RPM and then the car shut off.

I can start it and rev it to 1500 RPMs and it seems to be running fine, but if I let it back down to 1000 RPMs it starts to stall out unless I pound the gas again quickly.

I am not sure if this is a battery related problem or a fuel related problem or neither. I have about 1/2 tank of old gas in the tank.

One thing I noticed was that one of my spark plug wires was resting on the header and was partially melted so I replaced that wire with an old spare one I had and that did not fix the problem.

Could it be that there is not enough juice in the battery? Im not sure why it would run good at high RPMs and not low RPMs if that is the case.

What should I do about that gas?

I need help fast since I am planning on driving my car 3 hours back to school tomorrow.

ii had the same exact problem, car stalling around 1500, sucked bad too cause you had to keep your foot on the gas when you stop, but i fixed the problem by buyin a new MAF sensor, however, it may be different for you, im not sure if its the spart plug wire thats melted a little, i mean, im pretty sure thats not it, but you never know, cause i when i bought my car it was only running off 7 cylinders, till i found out that it was unplugged, and it never died or stalled on me then, but it can me many things, im just tellin you my experience,

I charged the battery and that seems to be fine, I looked at vacuum lines and they all seemed to be in fine condition.

Do you think this is fuel related? As in the fuel is bad or the fuel messeed up the fuel filter?

The fuel in you tank may have lost some volatility. Go fill the tank with fresh, LOW octane fuel. Low octane is more volatile, and the "oil" in your tank will be diluted by the fresh fuel and should burn a little better.

Changed the fuel filter lately? It may be a good thing to put on your "To Do" list.
