Brake issue while in Park

I have a 1986 automatic z28 camaro with a 305 electronic fuel injection engine. When I put it in PARK, the wheels don't lock - the brakes don't engage. What is the issue here and how do I fix it? Also, does anyone have a good website for an automatic single button shift **** and emergency brake handle? And is it possible to put a T-shaped shift handle on my shifter when a single button ball **** had been there before?

Thanks, CJ

the wheels are not supposed to lock with the brakes in park, the tranny holds the car in place via the park selection. it is common to get a LITTLE roll out of the car when putting it in park just because of all the drive train components taking up slack to hold the car. in other words, if you pull into a parking space and stop with the brakes, then place the tranny in park while still holding the brake, when you release the brake the car might roll a little bit untill everything tightens up.

My car doesn't STOP rolling... if it's on any sort of incline. I have to use the emergency brake.

Sounds like the parking pawl is not engaging. It could be a linkage adjustment, and trashed park pawl, snapped pivot pin, or planetary shell that is toothless on the exterior. Try adjusting the linkage, or removing the linkage and manually engaging the trans into PARK. If the pawl still doesn't lock the drive line, you get to pull the transmission.
