To Balance or not to Balance?
To Balance or not to Balance?
I'm getting ready to assembly my short block, but I had some questions first. Has anyone had there bottom end balanced by
a machine shop? Would you have this done before pressing the pistons to the rods? What all do they need from the motor to do this? The reason I'm asking is my shop has the J tool to press the
pistons and if balancing the bottom end isn't a big deal I could forgo the machine shop completely.

I always have mine balanced, unless I'm using a crank and a set of rods that I know for certain came from the factory together, as an assembly, that way. If it's any other combination of parts, I get it balanced. And I always either have the pistons balanced or do it myself.
And yes, the rods need to be balanced to each other, and the crank balanced to them, before the pistons on hung onto them.
