non thirdgen timing question..please help

My brother has a 73 duster with a 340. He has had some work done with it and has 10.5-1 CR. I do not know many other specs but Im trying to find a base timing that will work well with his car. After the car heats up and he turns it off then tries to restart, the timing is off so bad that it clicks and wont turn over(note this is what he is telling me, I have not worked on the car yet). It will start fine the first try before the car is running. Is there a way of adjusting timing by the ear without any tools? Thanks for your help in advance.

Engine hot - retard it until it starts with no pinging.
This is how I set my GTO. Worked great.
