well i've figured that much i'm looking at either a 305, 350, or 383 and i'm most likely going to go with an 8speed auto tranny or manual 6, but have no clue on the rear sofar..

Taking a page from NASCAR/Watkins Glen (or more regionally, Elkhart Lake):
  • No rear gears over 3.23, unless the longest straight stretch is less than half a mile;
  • You'll want slightly wider ring gaps for the sustained higher RPM;
  • Extra oil capacity;
  • An auxilliary oil cooler;
  • Baffles or trap doors in the sump;
  • Baffles in the fuel tank;
  • Extra cooling capacity for both the engine and transmission;
  • Less valve lift and more valve diameter to achieve flows - nothing over 0.600" lifts;
  • Lightweight valve train components;
  • Lower stall speed TC (unlike a ¼-mile setup). High slippage causes more heat;
  • Lightweight wheels and tires, with a high heat rejection rate;
  • A front air dam and side air skirts to keep the air from under the vehicle - keep the rear open;
  • Larger brake discs and ceramic brake pads;
I'm sure you;ll get more opinions.
